Gluten and Dairy Free German Chocolate Brownies are all about the sticky luscious frosting. Taking the help of a favorite boxed brownie mix allows me to easily whip these up, spending all of my time on the decadent nutty frosting.

We all have those chocolate lovers in our lives. Sometimes you want to surprise them with fun delicious treat, just because. Brownies are the perfect anytime dessert. They’re chewy texture and instantly taste of comfort make them ideal for all occasions. From a back yard barbecue to a bake sale, and the Sunday dinners in between they are always a hit.

For this recipe we’re taking the classic boxed brownie mix and giving it a little makeover. Brownies on their own are awesome. Brownies with the addition of chocolate chips takes them over the top. You can use your favorite Gluten Free brownie mix for this easy recipe, along with your favorite Dairy Free chocolate chips.

Unlike some frostings that just require mixing, this frosting is cooked on the stove top, resulting in that almost caramel like texture and flavor. Rich egg yolks are combined with Dairy Free butter and Dairy Free evaporated milk. Brown sugar adds to that caramel flavor. As it simmers and begins to bubble, it’s transformed, tempting you to dip into it with a spoon. Coconut and pecans finish it off.

Brownies Made Easy with Gluten and Dairy Free German Chocolate Brownies

Skip the complicated baking and let’s have fun creating your new favorite brownies. The most difficult part of making these is saving the frosting for the brownies!

  • For this recipe we are using the help of a boxed brownie mix. Use your favorite Gluten Free brand and prepare according to the package directions with the addition of 1/2 cup Dairy Free chocolate chips.
  • Allow the brownies to cool before frosting them.
  • To make your German chocolate cake frosting, add the egg yolks, sugar, Dairy Free butter, and Dairy Free evaporated milk to a sauce pan over medium-low heat.
  • Make sure you are continually stirring. This will prevent the eggs from scrambling.
  • Continue to stir until the sauce thickens. It will hug the back of your spoon.
  • When it begins to get thick and bubble, add in your vanilla.
  • Remove from the stove and allow to cool.
  • Once cooled stir in your shredded coconut and chopped pecans.

Ingredients

Gluten Free Brownies

  • 1 pkg Gluten Free brownie mix
  • 1/2 cup Dairy Free chocolate chips

German Chocolate Cake Frosting

  • 1 cup Dairy Free evaporated milk
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup Dairy Free butter
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 2 cups pecans, chopped
  • 1 cup coconut flakes

Instructions

Gluten Free Brownies

  • Prepare brownies according to the box directions with the addition of the chocolate chips.
  • Allow the brownies to completely cool before frosting.

German Chocolate Cake Frosting

  • Add the egg yolks, butter, sugar, and evaporated milk to a pot over medium-low heat, stirring to combine.
  • Continuously stir as the sauce begins to thicken.
  • Once it begins to get really thick add the vanilla, stirring to combine.
  • Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
  • Once cool stir in the coconut and pecans.
  • Spread over the top of the cooled brownies.
  • Enjoy!
