When it comes to eating out in Wilmington, North Carolina, the culinary scene is packed with spots you have to try. Whether you’re craving fine dining, baked goods, sushi, or the best burger in town, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a guide to the must-visit places that offer the best bites in Wilmington.

Fine Dining:

Seabird

If you follow me on social media, you know I have a few go-to spots, and for special occasions, Seabirds is at the top of my list. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere sets the stage for an incredible experience. The food at Seabirds is outstanding, crafted with the highest quality ingredients and thoughtfully prepared in every dish.

The thoughtfulness of the presentation and quality of food can only be attributed to the chefs, Dean and Lydia. In 2019, Neff received a James Beard Foundation semifinalist nod for “Best Chef Southeast” and kicked off plans for Seabird, a place that celebrates Wilmington’s coastal food culture and the beauty of the seasons. Plus, Dean was also a semifinalist for the James Beard award in 2023 and made it to the finals for “Outstanding Chef” in 2024—how awesome is that?

One of the best parts? Their commitment to personalized service—right away, servers check for any allergies, ensuring everyone can enjoy a meal tailored to them. The standout dish? Their ridiculously large seafood tower! Not your typical cold seafood setup, it’s packed with delicious dips, pickled sides, and a variety of flavorful bites. Known for their fish, Seabirds is an absolute must-visit for seafood lovers, offering a perfect combination of great food and exceptional service.

RX Restaurant

When RX reopened, it quickly became one of Joe’s and my go-to spots for a meal. For about six months, we treated ourselves to a weekly visit after yoga, and honestly, it was hard to resist! This sea-to-table restaurant is all about fresh, local flavors, sourcing their seafood right off Topsail Island, Wrightsville, and Carolina Beach. They even farm their own oysters from their local oyster farm!

Everything on their menu is made from scratch, including their amazing breads and sauces. The fish dishes are top-notch, and those tacos? Pure bliss. But the real showstopper has to be their seasonal hand pies served with ice cream—my absolute favorite dessert in town! Each flavor highlights what’s fresh and in season, and they’re just incredible.

Port Land Grille

This is true white linen dining—upscale yet relaxed. Joe and I were absolutely blown away by how exceptional our meals were! It’s hands down one of the best fish experiences I’ve had since moving to Florida. The mahi I ordered was a perfectly thick filet, expertly cooked, and a far cry from the typical “floppy fish” you sometimes encounter. The service was impeccable, and their mocktails, especially the Mojitos, were a refreshing treat. Located in Lumina Station, it’s also perfect for a nice evening walk after dinner.

Quick Bites:

Grimm Burger

The highly anticipated opening of Grimm Burger is finally here! After building a strong fanbase from their food truck, they’ve now set up a permanent location in the Mayfair district. Although I usually wait a few months before trying a new restaurant, I couldn’t resist stopping by within the first week—and it was worth every bite! Having tested all the burgers around Wilmington, I can confidently say Grimm Burger serves the best Smashburger-style burgers in town. Their fries are a must-have too—perfectly crispy and the ideal pairing for their incredible burgers.

Kipos Greek Taverna

Kipos has quickly become one of those places I find myself craving every week! Their food is consistently outstanding, with a menu that features authentic flavors and fresh ingredients. I highly recommend checking out their specials whenever you go—they’re always unique and showcase seasonal ingredients in the best way.

Here are some of their best dishes you have to try:

  • Kipos Burger: Juicy and flavorful, this burger is crafted with high-quality ingredients and served with house-made fries. Perfect for anyone searching for the best burger in Wilmington!
  • Lamb Chops: Grilled to perfection and seasoned with traditional Greek herbs, these lamb chops are a must-try for lovers of authentic Greek cuisine.
  • Souvlaki: Tender skewers of marinated chicken or pork, grilled and served with pita and tzatziki. This dish is ideal for those looking for the best Greek food experience.
  • Moussaka: A classic Greek dish featuring layers of eggplant, spiced meat, and béchamel sauce, baked to golden perfection. A perfect keyword for anyone searching for Greek comfort food.
  • Seafood Pasta: Featuring fresh, locally sourced seafood tossed with perfectly cooked pasta and a light sauce. This dish is a hit for seafood lovers and those looking for delicious coastal cuisine.
  • Greek Salad: A refreshing mix of ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and feta, drizzled with olive oil. Great for anyone seeking healthy and delicious Greek dishes.
  • Baklava: A sweet pastry made with layers of phyllo dough, nuts, and honey syrup, this dessert is a delightful ending to any meal and a keyword favorite for those looking for the best Greek dessert.

Bonus Dishes

  • Spanakopita: Flaky phyllo pastry filled with spinach and feta cheese, ideal for appetizers.
  • Grilled Octopus: Tender and charred, served with a lemon and herb dressing, perfect for adventurous eaters.

Their drink selection is also fabulous, with an impressive array of cocktails, mocktails, and wines to complement any dish.

The atmosphere at Kipos is inviting, making it the perfect place to unwind over a meal. And being located in Lumina Station, you can enjoy a relaxing walk afterward around the boutiques and outdoor spaces.

Ceviches

Ceviches is a go-to spot in Wilmington for fresh, bold flavors and vibrant Panamanian-inspired dishes! I’m absolutely obsessed with their empanadas and coconut shrimp—both are must-haves during your visit. This casual, quick-dining experience is packed with flavor, making it the perfect choice for a delicious and laid-back meal that’s full of excitement and zest. Be sure to try the guacamole sampler paired with their freshly made plantain chips for an unforgettable appetizer!

  • Ceviche de Pescado: If you’re a fan of fish, you’ve got to try this. They use the freshest catch of the day, and it’s seasoned just right with herbs and spices that really elevate the flavor.
  • Tacos de Pescado: Trust me, these fish tacos are next-level! Crispy fish, tangy slaw, and a zesty sauce all wrapped in warm tortillas—what’s not to love?
  • Sopa de Mariscos: If you’re in the mood for something cozy, their seafood soup is where it’s at. It’s loaded with the day’s catch and packed with comforting flavors that warm you right up.
  • Patacones: You can’t go wrong with these twice-fried green plantains! They’re served with a bunch of tasty dips that really highlight the bold flavors of Panamanian cooking.

Whether you’re craving a quick bite or a flavorful feast, Ceviches is the place to satisfy your appetite for Latin cuisine.

The Half Sandwich Shop

No question about it—The Half is hands down the best sandwich shop around! Joe and I were surprised by how hard it was to find a truly good sandwich in town, especially after trying so many recommendations that just fell flat. But one day, I stumbled upon The Half while searching for nearby restaurants, and it was a game-changer.

What I love most is that they cater to everyone, with mouthwatering carnivore sandwiches loaded with quality meats and fantastic vegan options that don’t skimp on flavor. We tried a couple of their sandwiches, and each one was packed with flavor, perfectly crafted, and absolutely worth the calories! Honestly, everything we saw come out of the kitchen looked incredible—this place has the sandwich game down to perfection, no matter what you’re craving!

Genki Sushi

Their appetizers are equally fantastic—perfect for a quick snack or an addition to your meal, and they never disappoint. Plus, the friendly, welcoming vibe at Genki Sushi makes it a top choice for relaxing and savoring some of the best sushi in town.

Breakfast & Brunch:

Famous Toastery

For a spot that serves up variety and healthy options, Famous Toastery is my absolute favorite! Their crab cake Benedict is hands down the best—loaded with fresh, flavorful crab and so delicious! The menu is packed with choices for every craving, from breakfast classics to lighter, healthier options, making it perfect for everyone. Plus, they’ve got cocktails, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and both indoor and outdoor seating options, so you can relax and enjoy your meal however you like.

Bespoke Coffee

Bespoke Coffee is one of my absolute favorite coffee spots! The vibe is cozy and inviting, the staff is always friendly, and of course, the coffee is top-notch. Even though it’s a 45-minute drive for me, it’s totally worth it to stroll around Wilmington with one of their delicious drinks in hand. Whether I’m grabbing a classic brew or trying something new, each visit is a delightful experience!

Sweet Treats:

Wilmington Bread Company

If you’re after the best croissants and bread in Wilmington, Wilmington Bread Company is a must-visit! Their sliced sourdough bread has become a staple in our home—Joe won’t eat anything else now and needs at least one slice a day!

Made with organic, locally-sourced grains milled right in North Carolina (some even in-house), their bread has an incredible depth of flavor. Thanks to their strong partnerships with local millers, each batch maximizes natural flavors.

From sourdough bagels and pizza dough to fresh weekly breads and pastries, their offerings are always worth trying. And while we love their sourdough sandwich bread, the almond croissants are the real showstopper—we grab one every time we’re at the farmer’s market. They also pop up at local stores, so keep an eye on their schedule!

Kilwins

Kilwins has been one of my favorites since my Michigan days, and the Wilmington location is every bit as irresistible! Right in historic downtown, the sweet smell of freshly made waffle cones and fudge pulls you in from the Riverwalk. As soon as you step inside, you’re hit with the warm aromas of house-made chocolate, creamy ice cream, and treats crafted fresh daily. Watching their handmade sweets being prepared in-store adds a fun touch—perfect for grabbing a treat as you stroll around Wilmington’s charming downtown.

Boombalatti’s

If you’re on the hunt for dairy-free options, Boombalatti’s is the place to go! Their dairy-free ice cream selection is top-notch and offers a variety of delicious flavors. Whether you have dietary restrictions or just want a guilt-free treat, Boombalatti’s is the perfect stop for satisfying your sweet cravings without compromise. You won’t even miss the dairy!

Britt’s Donuts

I did the legwork for you, folks! Joe and I indulged in so many doughnuts, and we finally discovered the best of the best: Britt’s Donuts! While technically in Carolina Beach, Britt’s is a must for any doughnut lover—and trust me, it’s worth the drive. This iconic spot has been serving their legendary homemade glazed donuts since 1939, now under the ownership of Bobby Nivens and his wife for over 40 years. Frequently making national top 10 lists, Britt’s even helped Carolina Beach’s boardwalk land on USA Today’s “best boardwalks for food” list. The beach views and melt-in-your-mouth donuts make for the ultimate treat!

Gluten-Free by the Sea

If you’re searching for gluten-free eats in Wilmington, look no further than Gluten-Free by the Sea! Plus, their treats are available in many retail stores, and they have a cozy storefront where you can grab your favorites. You won’t want to miss out on this deliciousness!

Pizza:

Salita Pizza

When it comes to pizza, Salita’s is hands down the best in town! Their crust, sauces, and toppings are all crafted with incredible detail, resulting in flavor combinations that are anything but traditional. This isn’t your average pepperoni pizza—every aspect is thoughtfully designed, allowing you to taste the difference in every bite. The pizza crust brings back memories of Florence, with an unreal flavor and texture that keeps me coming back for more. I love the smaller size of the pizzas; Joe and I usually split one, which comes in four delicious pieces.

A quick tip: don’t modify anything at Salita’s! The owner has perfected the recipes, and altering them can ruin the intended flavor experience. When you visit, just order a pizza and enjoy it as it is! Keep in mind that they only offer outdoor seating, so it’s perfect for a takeout picnic.

Salita’s isn’t just about pizza! They also offer fantastic bagel sandwiches, which are a must-try. The combinations change regularly, and sometimes they whip up sweet pastries that you won’t want to miss. If you’re in the mood for unique and flavorful eats, Salita’s should definitely be on your list!

Benny’s Big Time

Benny’s Big Time is the spot if you’re craving gluten-free Detroit-style pizza in Wilmington! Their gluten-free Detroit pizza is a game-changer—it’s thick, crispy, and packed with flavor, just the way it should be. And they take extra care by serving it in its own container, so everyone can dig in without a worry. The cozy indoor setting makes it perfect for a relaxed pizza night, whether you’re going classic or trying something new.

Pizzeria Don Luca

Don Luca’s is an absolute favorite in Wilmington for both pizza and wings. They’ve got a variety of pizzas that range from classic to creative—like their pickle pizza, which I can’t get enough of! It’s an easy spot to swing by for pickup or enjoy a meal outside. But here’s the real winner: their chicken wings. These are hands-down the best wings in town, with house-made sauces that pack each bite with flavor. Plus, their top-notch service makes every visit a treat. Don Luca’s covers all the cravings!

Best Vegan:

Green House

I absolutely love The Green House! They offer an ever-changing lineup of dishes that keeps things exciting. One of my all-time favorites is their dairy-free cheese board, which is absolutely delicious! I enjoy going there with friends, grabbing a variety of dishes to share, and indulging in a family-style meal. It’s a fantastic way to experience their diverse menu and enjoy a cozy, communal dining experience. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, The Green House is a must-try spot for anyone seeking fresh and flavorful cuisine!

Best Chinese Food

Indochine

There’s a reason why this restaurant is highly rated! With an extensive menu, I’ve tried dozens of their dishes, and they are all incredibly delicious. The generous portion sizes mean I often have enough for 2-3 meals, making it a great value for the quality of food. Be sure to arrive early, as this popular spot is always packed! Whether you’re looking for a casual dining experience or a place to celebrate a special occasion, this restaurant is sure to impress with its flavorful offerings and inviting atmosphere.

Farmers Market:

Tidal Creek Farmers Market

I love Tidal Creek Market! This charming local farmers market is a must-visit, offering a fantastic variety of fresh produce, delicious baked goods, and gluten-free dessert options. From specialty mushrooms to refreshing kombucha, Tidal Creek has it all. You can pop in for your grocery needs or enjoy a drink from their excellent coffee, smoothie, and juice bar.
